By mid-August 1958, Johnny Cash had finished recording the songs that would comprise two of his first Columbia Records releases: The Fabulous Johnny Cash and Hymns by Johnny Cash. This shot of Johnny Cash in a motel room, his chin resting nonchalantly on the body of what is literally a signature model Gibson six-string, shows the artist on the road on the brink of his pop-country breakout. By 1959, The Fabulous Johnny Cash would reach #19 on the Billboard Pop albums chart while two of its singles -- Don't Take Your Guns To Town and Frankie's Man, Johnny -- would scale the nation's top 10 pop and country charts.
