The photo feels very intimate, even though Tom is standing onstage at a sold-out arena surrounded by thousands of cheering fans. I got some great shots during this moment each night, especially of TP. Sometimes he’d sneer at me, or kick at my camera, or poke at me with the fallen mic stand. It was always a lot of fun.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOn this particular night in Berkeley, I was behind his amp line taking some wide shots of the stage and crowd when TP spotted me. Slowly, Tom dragged his guitar across the stage, and when he was about five feet away, he swung it up and began jousting me with it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eExcept this time, I’d gotten too close.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWHAM!\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe butt end of Tom’s Fender Electric 12 met my Nikon 14-24mm lens. It’s the only time it’s ever happened to me.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eStartled, I stumbled back behind Tom’s amps as Ferrone pounded his cymbals, ending the song. The band took their bow and exited the stage, and as I was packing up my gear, I examined the lens, fully expecting it to be cracked. To my surprise, nothing was broken.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAbout 15 minutes or so later, my phone rang. “Did I break it?” Tom asked with a laugh when I picked up. I told him that the lens had surprisingly survived. “Glad it’s ok,” he said. On the 2017 tour, Tom almost exclusively played a Gibson SG on “Mary Jane’s.”\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI loved this moment. You could hear a pin drop most nights just before Tom played the intro riff. The stage was usually dark, save for a lone spotlight on TP. Tom would wander around the stage, strumming the guitar, before settling on the stage edge to launch into the song. By the time the band kicked in, the stage lights were up and the crowd was ecstatic.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e“Mary Jane’s” was a galvanizing force in the band’s show, whether it was up front in the setlist or toward the end of the night. Everyone knows the words. Doesn’t matter if it’s under a circus tent in Cork, Ireland, in a hockey arena outside Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in a big beautiful park in Napa, CA, or at Deer Creek Music Center in Noblesville in front of tens of thousands of Indiana girls (and boys) on an Indiana night. I was honored. He asked me to put together a gallery of images to choose from, and after careful consideration, this image from the band’s headlining appearance at the Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores, AL in May 2013 was selected.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThere’s an incredible energy exchange at the moment captured in this photo. The band stands together onstage, soaking in all the love from an adoring audience at the end of two hours of music. It’s awesome in every sense of the word, and I never tire of photographing it. I’ve shot it from many different angles, but I always come back to this one, with the artist in the foreground and the cheering audience behind them. They really dug in and explored the catalog, playing some deep album cuts, cool covers and other rarities. Lots of family and friends came out for those shows, they were really joyous events.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e“Runnin’ Down A Dream” always offered a nice opportunity to get photos of Mike and Tom together. Not that they didn’t interact on other songs, but you could count on them to be in close proximity for that song in particular. Watching them play together, it was easy to see the incredible connection and love between these two friends of more than 40 years. The Captain and the Co-Captain, as Tom called Mike every night onstage when he introduced the band. They were more than friends, bandmates, or partners. Everyone was excited to be overseas, but there was a special buzz around the Royal Albert Hall, the legendary London hall that has hosted so many historic concerts and events.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhen Tom arrived in the backstage tunnel a few hours before doors opened for the first show, I knew that it was gonna be a memorable night. TP stepped out of one side of the limo, and his wife, Dana, emerged from the other side, holding a black suit bag. I was hanging about to see if they’d be up for a photo in front of a graffiti mural underneath the venue with the faces of various iconic musicians who’d tread the boards. Tom was up for it, and we snapped a few frames before he started for the elevator. “Hey,” he said, turning to Dana. “Where’s the bag?”\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e“Dean’s got it,” she replied, turning to their long-time security chief, who was holding the suit bag. That was the moment I knew that the photos were going to be good. Something special was in that bag.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI don’t know who designed the beautiful black pinstripe suit Tom wore onstage that night at the Royal Albert Hall; I assume it was Glen Palmer, his long-time stylist. But when the band hit the opening chords to “Listen to Her Heart” and the lights came up, Tom was standing center stage sporting that suit with a beautiful vintage yellow Fender Esquire around his neck. It was the photographic equivalent of shooting fish in a barrel; you could almost do no wrong. Just as Mike Campbell took his first guitar solo after the song’s bridge, Tom drifted to stage left, and, looking out over the sold-out Royal Albert Hall, broke into a huge grin.
