In Miami Beach on their first tour of the United States, after their Ed Sullivan Show appearance in New York on February 9, the band were taken on February 18 to the training camp of Clay, who was preparing for his February fight against heavyweight champion Sonny Liston. Liston was heavily favored, even the Beatles thought Clay would lose, and Liston had refused to meet them. Clay arrived to find the band growing impatient, but won them over with his charm, joking in the ring, lifting Ringo under his arm and saying "When Liston reads about the Beatles visiting me, he'll be so mad I'll knock him out in three."
Clay defeated Liston and became Heavyweight Champion of the World. This photograph by Charles Trainor carries a stamped signature and is estate stamped.
