Bruce Springsteen plays his guitar from out in the crowd, turned back toward Clarence Clemons on stage, in 1978. Lynn Goldsmith photographed Springsteen and the E Street Band through the making of Darkness on the Edge of Town and on the 1978 tour that followed, a period when she was dating Springsteen and had close, unfiltered access to the band in the studio, on stage and on the road.

The picture captures the partnership at the heart of the E Street Band's live show, the frontman and his saxophonist locked in across the lip of the stage. Goldsmith's photographs from this era were collected in Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band: Darkness on the Edge of Town, published by Taschen in 2023. A leading portrait and music photographer since the 1970s, she has also published Springsteen: Access All Areas. © Lynn Goldsmith, 1978.
