In 1973, Duffy photographed the David Bowie Aladdin Sane album cover image during the second of five sessions together. Shot in a London studio, the session produced the red and blue lightning bolt, Duffy's idea, painted on by makeup artist Pierre La Roche. This eyes-closed frame became the cover, and for nearly four decades it was the only widely seen image from the shoot. According to Chris Duffy, Bowie said the album should be called A Lad Insane, which Duffy read as Aladdin Sane.
This revolutionary image became the defining look of Bowie's long career and the visual legacy of both men, referred to as the Mona Lisa of Pop. It is held within the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and by collectors worldwide.
