Metallica live in action at San Quentin State Prison, California, in 2003, photographed by Danny Clinch, with James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett. On May 1 the band played for over an hour to an audience made up entirely of inmates and prison workers. Prison officials arranged the show in exchange for Metallica using the grounds the day before to film the video for "St. Anger," the title track of their upcoming album. The set opened with "Creeping Death" and ran through "Master of Puppets," "One" and "Enter Sandman" before closing with "Battery."
Clinch, born in New Jersey, in 1964, began his career as an intern for Annie Leibovitz. He has photographed artists from Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash to Bruce Springsteen and Tupac Shakur, and has directed concert films for Pearl Jam.
