Ray Charles in Culver City, California, in 1991, photographed by Timothy White. White had photographed Ray many times, and his assistant always recorded new music for their shoots so that both the crew and subjects were entertained. On this day the assistant had found some early Ray recordings. In White's words, "Ray was blown away by how obscure it was," and the photograph catches his reaction to hearing some of his old musician friends on the record.
The portrait was later paired with Jim Marshall's 1960 San Francisco photograph of Charles in Match Prints, the 2010 book in which Marshall and White set pictures of the same stars side by side, taken decades apart. White has shot album covers for Bruce Springsteen and Aretha Franklin and covers for Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone and Esquire.
