ABOUT THIS PIECE
"A single shot of Jimi is never enough to tell the whole story. The New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day Hendrix Band of Gypsys concerts were one of the high points of the Fillmore East years. There was a lot of preparation to make the New Year’s Eve show especially memorable. For the Joshua Light Show I shot an opening sequence in 16mm for the Voices of East Harlem, the opening act on the bill. I filmed them leaving their houses in Harlem, getting on the subway to go downtown, exiting at 8th Street, pushing the cube sculpture at Astor Place and running down Second Avenue past Ratner’s, under the F.E. marquee, and into the theater. As they were seen running into the theater on screen, they came running down the aisles from the back of the auditorium and jumped onstage and launched into their first number. Then, as midnight approached, we flashed a countdown on screen and as the clock struck raised the light show screen revealing staff, crew and musicians onstage, including Jimi Hendrix who played an extraordinary rendition of Auld Lang Syne.I shot a whole roll of Jimi in B&W like this, enough to make a little animation. I also shot a whole 400 foot roll of 16mm color film with sound of the songs 'Fire' and 'Stepping Stone.'" - Amalie R. Rothschild
