The 1972 tour supported Exile on Main St. and was the band's first American run since Altamont in 1969. It opened in Vancouver on June 3 and closed at Madison Square Garden on July 26, setting the template for the rock tour as a pop culture event, with a private plane, a traveling press corps and celebrity hangers-on. Russell, who had toured with the Stones in 1969 and photographed the Beatles for Let It Be, was there to document it.
