Van Morrison, Los Angeles, CA, 1979
I met Van at his home in Northern California and he took me on a crazy drive in his Porsche as we listened to the album. He was having doubts about using his image on the album cover, as we had done a year earlier. So I asked a mutual friend who had played violin on one of Van’s previous albums to assemble a makeshift band in a studio near Van’s home. I explained that he didn’t have to do anything, just play music. He wound up performing for 3 hours, leading the band through his monumental catalogue. It was an amazing jam session. He was in the zone. -- Norman Seeff
